Required and optional diagnostic data
Windows sends Microsoft diagnostic data that is meant to help with updates, security and fixing bugs. It is divided into required data (the minimum needed for the system to work) and optional data, which adds further detail about how you use the system and apps.
Required data cannot be turned off in a regular home edition. Optional data, however, you can decline.
How to limit optional data
- Open Settings (Windows key + I).
- Go to Privacy & security and then Diagnostics & feedback.
- Turn off sending of optional diagnostic data.
- In the same section you can also review other options, such as tailored experiences or the diagnostic data viewer.
What to take away
What matters is knowing the option exists and having it set the way you want. BirdGuard shows the current state of diagnostic data on your computer and alerts you if optional data is being sent as well.
