Why it matters
Many programs add automatic startup when they are installed. They slow down your computer's boot and run even when you do not need them. Startup is also a place where unwanted programs like to settle.
Where to find it
- Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc): the Startup apps tab shows programs and their impact on boot.
- Settings → Apps → Startup: the same with clear toggles.
- Task Scheduler: scheduled tasks that run at a given time or on an event.
- Services (services.msc): Windows and program services, including how they start.
What to watch out for
Do not turn off anything you do not understand. For an unfamiliar name, first find out what it is. BirdGuard shows startup entries in one place and alerts you when a new item, service or scheduled task appears.
